Pingtan county in Fujian province will host an international cycling race on June 8.

More than 1,000 cyclists from the mainland, Taiwan and the world are expected to participate in the race circling Pingtan Island.

Named after "Ocean Cup," the event combines marine science culture and the sport of cycling.

The competition is divided into six groups: professional men's road bicycle (60 km), men's road bicycle (20 km), men's mountain bicycle pro (40 km), men's bicycle (20 km), women's mountain bicycle (20) and women's bicycle (10 km).

It will be the largest cycling race in Fujian province, according to the organizing committee.

The competitors will cycle around a 10-km route on Huandao (Island-Ring) Road, which is a perfect field for the race, according to Li Gangsheng, deputy director of the Fujian Provincial Marine and Fishery Bureau.

The Pingtan cycling race will strive to become a top sports event along with the Xiamen Marathon, promoting Fujian's marine and island culture, he added.

To better prepare for the competition, Pingtan set up eight work teams for coordination. There will also be promotional events such as a slow-riding contest, Q&A sessions about the event and an exhibition featuring marine protection and bike industries, the organizing committee said.
